Bike programs are a great way to develop measurably functional outcomes and have a fun time doing it! At the 2012 International Seating Symposium, Ginny Paleg, DScPT, PT, MS (Montgomery Country Public Infants and Toddlers Program, Rockville, MD) and Jennifer Miros (St. Louis Children’s Hospital Cerebral Palsy Sports and Rehabilitation Center) presented an Instrumental Session, “Everything You Need to Know to Start a Biking Program for Children with Special Needs”. The session provided therapists specifics for developing a biking program for children with conditions such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injuries and other diagnoses. They provided information on designing optimal biking programs (assisted and independent biking), developing appropriate measurable functional outcomes and optimizing features to assist all children, especially those who are not community ambulators, to bike successfully.
